How the Student Council Works

The current Pechersk School International Student Council has 19 members. Each homeroom elects its representative. The representative then represents the homeroom’s ideas, demands or suggestions. Our student council meetings therefore consist of 2 representatives per grade (1 per homeroom) with the exception of 12th grade, which has 4 representatives. This is due to the fact that our meetings work much better when run by the 12th grade students, which is probably due to the superior amount of experience, education and maturity of the 12th grade students. In addition to the representatives, a teacher supervisor is present at the meetings. The reason for this is the supervision of the meeting and providing help.

There is a hierarchy in our Student Council that we tried to avoid this year by eliminating the post of a president, due to last year’s problems. Instead, we employed the plan of a rotating chairperson. In the beginning of the year, volunteers are elected from 10th through 12th grade, who then lead the meetings of the Student Council. The Chairperson has no particular privileges. This method turned out to work very well.

This is the description of all positions of the Student Council:

14 representatives (2 per grade, 6th grade to 12th grade), which include:

  • Secretary/ Vice Chairperson
The secretary is usually the next Chairperson. The secretary writes down the minutes, assigns tasks to selected groups of representatives and registers the presence of the representatives.

  • Treasurer
The treasurer keeps all the Student Council funds in a safe and keeps track of our profits and expenditures.

  • PR officer/ Attached Newspaper representative
The PR officer and/or the Attached newspaper representative deals with advertising the Student Council and its events. They also run the school newspaper and are a contributor of the Student Council website.

  • Rotating chairperson
The chairperson runs the meetings. Before each meeting, they send out the agenda that is to be discussed via email. They open and adjourn each meeting, as well as assign goals to the representatives.
        + 4 voluntary 12th grade students
        + 1 Teacher supervisor

All of those mentioned above, apart from the teacher supervisor, have the right to vote. Any other students, parents, teachers or administration staff are welcome to attend out meetings and discuss the issues with us, but they do not have the right to vote.

Please notice that the Chairperson is not superior to the other posts. The Chairperson merely directs the meeting and brings up points that are to be discussed.

Future Plans of the PSI Student Council

• Christmas Cross Dress
This event will take place on December 18, 2008 at school. Every participant will have to pay 10UAH. There are going to be three judges (Romana, Nazar, and Ryan). There are two prizes, an IPod and a Nokia phone, which will be given to the “sexiest”, and the “most confusing” person.

• Ice cream sale
PSI Student Council wants to sell ice creams regularly at the student store. We are currently looking for a freezer.

• Mirrors in bathrooms
After requests made by some students, we are planning to possibly place a larger mirror in the girls bathroom of the secondary building, and the current mirror which is in the secondary building girls bathroom will be moved, to either the Gym or the primary school girls bathroom, so as to facilitate more members of the PSI community.

• Prom
Prom is going to take place in April this year, as this is before the 12th graders leave, and after their mock exams. We are currently looking for a sponsor and venue, for the prom, but as it is still only early in the year, we are open to all suggestions and ideas.

Previous Accomplishments of the Student Council

As a student council, we are here to not only facilitate the needs and represent the student body, but we are here to encourage the students of our school to be united and to enjoy themselves.

One of the major events organized by the student council last year was the upper school prom.  The Prom is a night in which the students of grades 9 through to 12 are able to come together, dance, eat, dress nicely, and genuinely enjoy their evening. The proms of 2007 and 2008 were great successes, the prom of 2008 was held in a high-end club, on the bank of the Dnipro River. With a fantastic Catering Service and great music, the night went smoothly with everyone enjoying themselves.  The Prom was sponsored by one of the leading soft drink companies; Coca Cola, who provided, for free, drinks to everyone for the whole night. This allowed the student council to keep the prices of the tickets at a reasonable price, which came to $65 US each.

Approximately 50 students attended Prom in 2008. This was due to the exceptional work and devotion put in by the members of the student council, and the advertising through the Newsletter, Student Council Representatives and School assemblies.

Overall the Prom was a great success, and the plans for the prom of 2009 are already up and running, the Student Council is now able to learn from previous experiences, and hopefully the prom will be an even greater success in the upcoming year.
