IB Middle Years
Students enter the Secondary School and the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Grade 6. They take a broad and balanced range of subjects that focus on language, communication and intercultural understanding.
At PSI the Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five year course of study that starts in Grade 6 and continues through Grade 10. The MYP is an educational framework that requires students to study in eight subjects:
1. Literature taught in the student’s native language (English, French Russian, Ukrainian)
2. A foreign language (English, French, Russian, Ukrainian)
3. Humanities
4. Sciences
5. Mathematics
6. Arts
7. Physical education
8. Technology
These subjects are taught in each of the five years of the course. In the last two years students may choose electives in the arts. There are also separate classes to reflect different levels of achievement in Mathematics and Foreign languages.
Teachers present their curriculum through units of study based on guiding questions and focused through the Areas of Interaction. These are five different perspectives, which are taught through and across the subject groups, as well as in projects, whole school activities, and the MYP Personal Project in Grade 10. The Areas of Interaction are Approaches to Learning, Community and Service, Health and Social Education, Environment, and Human Ingenuity.
The MYP is designed to ensure that students become responsible citizens who are aware of the range of human achievement; are sensitive to other cultures; can communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds; demonstrate positive ethical attitudes, make reasoned decisions; think and act critically, creatively and independently to solve complex problems; and lead a healthy lifestyle.
The MYP provides students with the academic rigour required to enter the IB Diploma Programme in Grades 11 and 12. In addition, students who successfully complete the last two years of the programme (Grades 9 – 10) earn an IB-MYP Certificate.
