Confirmed / Suspected COVID-19 Cases
Local Authority Guidelines
PSI regularly checks, and acts upon, guidance from the Ministries of Health and Education of Ukraine, and regulations developed by the Chief Sanitary Doctor. In addition, PSI utilises CDC guidelines to create a comprehensive response.
Guidelines around confirmed or suspected Covid-19 cases will likely evolve as more is learned about the virus. The current full protocol is based on what is currently recommended by health professionals.
Confirmed COVID-19 Case
Employees and students who test positive for COVID-19 will require a quarantine period and will not be allowed on campus until fully recovered with two consecutive negative PCR tests and a doctor’s note stating that the individual is no longer contagious.
Close Contact with a Confirmed COVID-19 Case
Anyone who has been in close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case needs to self-isolate for a period of 14 days. PSI defines close contact as the following:
Any individual who was within 1.5 m of an infected person for at least 15 minutes starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to positive specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated.
This applies to any close contact outside of school, including immediate family members, household help, and any other extended family members and / or friends.
PSI’s measures are structured to limit the amount of close contact any one individual has with another. Areas used by a confirmed COVID-19 case will be closed off for deep-cleaning. In most cases, closure of campus for a positive case will not be necessary. The decision to close a portion of campus (class, grade level, and / or division) or all of the campus and move to remote learning will be context-specific; in line with local authority requirements / guidelines and CDC recommendations.
Suspected Case of COVID-19
When an employee or student appears to display symptoms of COVID-19, the individual should stay home and will not be allowed on campus. If a student or employee shows symptoms or is suspected of being COVID-19 positive whilst on campus, our response team will:
Isolate the person, with adult supervision if they are a student, and establish a plan for transportation home or to a medical facility.
Close off areas used by any sick person and not use them until they have been fully disinfected.
Notify staff and families immediately of a possible case of COVID-19, whilst maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
If the sick person has a viral infection other than COVID-19, they shall not return to campus until at least 48 hours after symptoms end and with the required doctor’s note. If they have COVID-19, refer to the section on confirmed cases.
Inform anyone who has been in direct contact with the person diagnosed with COVID-19 to stay home and to monitor symptoms, following CDC guidance if symptoms develop.
As necessary, temporary whole school, divisional or sectional closure will occur to allow for deep cleaning and sanitising of the affected areas.
Common cold, influenza (flu), and a host of other common illnesses have symptoms similar to COVID-19. Without a confirmed COVID-19 PCR test, it will be virtually impossible to tell the difference between what illness an employee or student has.
With this in mind, it will likely be difficult for the school to determine which suspected cases are COVID-19 and which are not. We will require parents to inform the school of any confirmed or suspected cases, we will track internally, and we will notify parents of any pertinent developments.
Medical Office & Family Liaison
Any contact with Covid-19 suspected or confirmed cases must be immediately reported to our Medical Office at firstname.lastname@example.org
Transparent information is crucial for prevention and containment. The school will respect the confidentiality of these cases, safeguarding the family’s right to privacy, throughout the ensuing contact tracing. In support of families during any suspected contact with COVID-19, PSI’s doctor, Tatiana Tkachuk, will serve in a support role as a family liaison if:
A family member is a suspected COVID-19 case.
The family resides with someone who is a suspected COVID-19 case, and / or has come in direct contact within a 14-day period with someone who is a suspected COVID-19 case.
Failure to communicate this critical information for the well-being of our school community is reprehensible and will result in communication with the school director, and possible further action.
